The John Alchin Beyond School Walls Program
In honor of John Alchin, former co-chief financial officer of Comcast, our company in 2008 introduced the John Alchin “Beyond School Walls” mentoring program at our corporate headquarters in Philadelphia. “Littles” in this program visit “Bigs” at their workplace every other week. Data from Big Brothers Big Sisters indicates that participating students show an increase in academic performance, feel more competent academically, are less likely to skip school and express a desire to attend and finish school. Besides Philadelphia, the program is now in Salt Lake City, Utah; Minneapolis-St.Paul, Minn.; Houston, Texas; Hartford, Conn.; Pittsburgh, Pa.; Detroit, Mich.; Portland, Ore.; Jacksonville, Miss.; Nashville, Tenn.; Manchester, N.H.; and Seattle, Wash.
