An estimated 30 percent of American households - mostly low-income families - don’t have Internet service in their homes. To help close that digital divide, and open a world of opportunity a
nd possibility for children, Comcast last fall launched Internet Essentials. It is one of the most ambitious and comprehensive broadband adoption programs ever undertaken in the United States.
The program offers eligible families the opportunity to receive discounted Internet service, purchase a low-cost computer and receive free digital literacy training. Families eligible for the program live in areas where Comcast offers Internet service and have a child in the household who receives free lunch as part of the National School Lunch Program.
Comcast will accept new program participants through the end of the 2013 - 2014 school year. Any household that enrolls during this period will remain eligible provided that a child living in the household qualifies to receive free school lunches.
Community Investment works in collaboration with community-based organizations at the national and local levels to support Internet Essentials. In 2011, Comcast’s community partners hosted more than 250 classes nationwide, training families on the Internet and its significant potential to improve their lives. Big Brothers Big Sisters, City Year, United Way Worldwide, National Council of La Raza, Boys & Girls Clubs of America and National Urban League are among Comcast's Internet Essentials national partners.
